Rejoice, rejoice, rejoice. And rejoice again!
Today we are greeted with the brilliant news that the recession is over, the exchequer coffers are overflowing with bounty, and all is right with the world.
I have no idea how we went from billions and billions in deficit to this new cash rich scenario but somehow we've manageed it. And, I, for one, personally, am delighted. Dee-lighted!
My breath was taken from me when I heard on the radio this morning that civil servants are now again being showered with excruciatingly massive bonuses. The recession must be OVER. Brendan Drumm (Captain in charge of deckchairs on the HMS HSE) has trousered a disgustingly whopping €70,000 bonus.
I am now hoping to hear Lenihan on the 6 o'clock news announcing the trebling of welfare payments and the halving of taxes in line with the new situation that the country is in. I honestly don't know who to thank for this latest development. Really, I don't.

Words fail me.
This is ridiculous.
The people responsible for this are ridiculous.
If the government does not openly, and strongly, condemn the SIPTU for this then then they are ridiculous.
If the people of Ireland do not condemn the government should they fail to condemn SIPTU then they too are ridiculous.
I suspect that the SIPTU will not be successful here. Can these clowns be outlawed or something? It's not as if they serve any meaningful purpose and they seem hell bent on destroying the country.

When the Drugs Don't Work
At last, the Government has woken up. Partly. Bulldozer Harney has waded in and is demanding value for money for the tax payer euro. She has slashed pharmacists incomes by up to 40% by providing new HSE contracts to them. She has given them 2 choices, accept it or quit. Or, in other words, like it or lump it. This is the way forward. Sort of. Unfortunately she's starting in the wrong place.
As of 5th August, we are over 16 billion in dept. 6 billion of which has been handed to the banks. This allows the banks to start fleecing the people who are propping it up by raising interest rates instead of going out of business like any other half decent completely incompetent organisation. While the national dept continues to ramp up mercilessly the cabinet remain on their extended leave. It would seem to me that action is required rather urgently now. Although, it's probably more likely that the situation would be substantially worse were the cabinet actively trying to do something about it but that's for another day.
Bulldozer Harney has the right idea but is failing to see the big picture. It is morally reprehensible for her to start attacking the private sector in this way while she is prepared to allow herself and her colleagues stand over the money drain that is the public sector. The private sector is already demonstrating its ability to adapt to the new climate while the public sector cowers behind it's deeply ignorant trade unions.
The Bulldozer should force the cabinet to start with the public sector and demand 40% pay cuts across the board as a way of balancing the books. And apply the same "like it or lump it" approach. If they are not prepared to do this then who or what gives them the right to attack the private sector?
I'm afraid this type of disgraceful cowardice has no place in post Celtic Tiger Ireland. It is simply short-sighted, ignorant, and plain stupid for our government to continue ramping the national debt while expecting the private sector to bail them out at every turn.
Please make the madness stop.

Our Mortgages are not Expensive Enough!
Permanent TSB have decided that the extortionate mortgages that we pay are not extortionate enough and have decided to lob 0.5% onto their variable rates.
I know what you're thinking. You're thinking that it seems a tad unfair seeing as how we are guaranteeing this bank in the 1st place with our tax euros. You're thinking that maybe seeing as how we're allowing the bank to operate with this guarantee that maybe the bank should not bite the hand that feeds it? But, you're looking at it all wrong! The poor bank has lost an absolute fortune through sheer incompetence over the last couple of years and how exactly are the executives going to get their ludicrously high bonuses this year if they don't fleece the tax payer? I mean, it's not as if it's the execs fault, now is it? Hmmmm?
It would seem to be a bit of a complete disgrace.
But, never fear! Lenihan will sort this out. He will wade in and say "Hey there! You! Yes, you, Bank over there! Stop fleecing the tax payers." And everything will be alright. He can do this because he can remove the guarantee from this bank and leave them exposed. Go Brian!
Unfortunately, Lenihan has decided to do nothing. Again. What's really amusing about this is that he claimed 100% confidently as he was removing mortgage interest relief for tax payers a small number of months ago that "interest rates are only going down" and that we can all afford this. How can a finance minister be so out of touch with what's going on? Now he's going to leave the bank to fleece the taxpayer. It's laughable. I can almost hear AIB/BoI initial disbelief at this followed quickly by manic joy. Expect similar increases from them now.
It's clear that our current government have no interest in protecting the population from the banks while throwing vast quantities of cash at them at the same time. We have to help ourselves now. All Permanent TSB account holders should withdraw their money immediately from the bank and close their accounts. This should inspire them to reverse this ridiculous decision.

Education, Education, er, Recreation?
It must be great to be a teacher. Especially during the summer months although the weather isn't great this year but with a couple of months to spare I suppose you could find the time to get some travelling done to sunnier spots.
After the publication of the Bord Snip report I heard the INTO General Secratary John Carr on the Last Word on Today FM. Now, I believe that education is paramount to the future of any country and I condemn strongly any government which attempts to cut education service. Along with everyone else, you say. John Carr agrees with this. He also wants the education of our children safe guarded. And to this end he was complaining about the proposals in the Bord Snip report. Specifically the proposals around cutting education. Good man, John!
However, Professor Ed Walsh of UL then came on and said that he had had the "misfortune" in the past of having to deal with teachers unions. He claimed that the unions and their members were not the slightest bit interested in the education of the children but were concerned only with maintaining their conditions and pay packets. He said that the unions were always trotting out the mantra that they were concerned only with protecting the poor, suffering children and if that was the case why don't they take a pay cut? As an example, he pointed out that in France the teachers get paid 75% less than they do in Ireland. I'm afraid that Carr just blustered at this point and had no real answers. Poor show, John!
We all know that childrens right to education is copper fastened in the constitution. We can't take that away. We also all know that FF has made a pigs tail-end of the economy and are having the most terrible time trying to balance the books. If the governemnt had "X" billion for education last year and has only "Y" billion for education this year then it stands to reason that they can only pay "Y" billion but they still must provide the service. If this means cuts in service pay then so be it. We simply cannot punish the children of today because of the ineptitude of the current government's handling of our economy.
So, let's get behind the children and get them what they need! Let's extract value for money from the education service. Let's have a long hard look at the benefit to the children, not to mention the economy, of having tens of thousands of people being paid for months at a time to do nothing during the summer. Let's have a look at why are teachers who attend training courses during the summer entitled to days off when they return to school at the expense of our childrens education. Let's have a look at why they are entitled to time off during school term in lieu of time spent travelling to courses during their extended holidays. Let's have a look at why they are entitled to 30 days uncertified sick leave a year. Let's have a look at why this sick leave is used, unchecked, as holidays by some. Let's have a look at why they get paid extra money for patrolling the yard. Let's have an understanding why they can't have staff meetings after the children go home but instead insist on closing the school early. Let's have the teachers and parents get together and demand a better system for our children. Finally, let's have this better system delivered for less money that it's currently costing.
To the teachers, unions, and Batt O'Keefe, please end this madness. You will find the parents, children, and voters deeply appreciative!

Buttered on Both Sides, with Plenty Left in the Tub.
MPACT, Ireland's largest public service union, has displayed a complete disconnect with reality by warning that it will respond with industrial action, including strikes, if the Government attempts to impose public service pay cuts, pension reductions, or compulsory redundancies.
This is posturing, at best. As the public sector has escaped from the economic catastrophe engineered and implemented by FF up to this point, it is now inevitable for the public sector to be "benchmarked" again back into reality.
Accounting boils down to 2 things. Money coming in, and money going out. When the money coming in (taxes) falls then the money going out also has to fall unless, of course, you had the wit in the first place to put money away in the good times but that's a whole other area of incompetence. The way that the outgoing money falls is vital.
Consider, as an exapmple, a car company, say Volkswagen. If the money in (car sales) falls then what happens? They cut costs. But they can't cut costs in a way that impacts the quality of the product they're making. They can't suddenly produce cars that fall apart after 5,000km and only come with 3 doors and no steering wheel. No, they cut wages and reduce staff numbers because it's the only way to survive. The private sector understands this. Clearly IMPACT don't. IMPACT represent the public sector and the public sector are there to provide a service and the government must ensure that they get the service within the budget they have and IMPACT must support this.
If IMPACT have a solution on how to save money other than pay cuts, pension deductions, or redundancies then let's hear it. Answers like raising taxes i.e. asking car buyers to pay MORE for lower-quality cars, are simply unacceptable in this day and age.

He claimed, this morning, that the public servants should not solely bear the brunt of expenditure cuts. Sure, isn't the public sector already paying a massive pension levy? This is an economic crisis for the whole country, not just the public sector, you know. This was his retalliation to the ESRI report that there is scope for further pay cuts in the public sector (not, as far as I know, that there have been any yet).
In the first quarter of this year the private sector was losing one job every two minutes while the public sector gained an extra 3,500 recruits. On top of this the private sector wages have fallen on average 20% while Brian Lenihan failed to cut increments from the public sector in the last budget which is costing the tax payer 300 million this year in pay rises.
So, Tom, you are half right. The burden is not being shared in an equitable way. The private sector are shouldering the lions share and it's time that the unions understood that and stopped alienating themselves from the entire country.

What the FF?
I was amazed to see the wonder of Brian Cowen/Brian Lenihan in action today. Last December the 2 Brians finally faced up to the reality that the economy that they had created was disappearing down the tubes rapidly and they needed a plan.
"Hurray!", we shouted, "Finally!"
So, what was the plan? The plan was to create a so-called "Smart Economy".
"Hurray!", we shouted again, a little quieter this time, "What is it?", we asked.
What it is, is an "Economy" but with the word "Smart" before it. Apparently.
"Huh?", we wondered.
We'll get back to you on that.
Well now, 6 months later Cowen has got back to us to let us know that he has set up a task force to tell him what this Smart Economy is. Is this for real? These guys decide that the solution to the financial mess that they made is something called a Smart Economy but they don't even know what it is? In fact it takes them 6 months to get around to getting other people started on figuring out what it's supposed to be.
Does anybody actually know what the 2 Brians actually do?

Back to the old Routine
Maybe it's me but when I was watching the election special on RTE the day after the local and european elections I was less than impressed by Brian Lenihan (Minister for Finance/FF) and Eamon Ryan (Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources/Green) as they blustered and bluffed their way through Miriam O'Callaghans questions.
I'm afraid that Mr Lenihan does not stand up to much scrutiny. This is the guy who whined mercilessly when he got the job as finance minister in the 1st place. He complained about how "unlucky" he was that the finances were in such a state as soon as he walked in the door. If only he was capable of putting the finances back as he found them. That would be something. I can only ponder at what his reaction would be today if he were offered the job today. Would he scream and run? Safe to say that if we knew what he was about to do to the country at the time he was whinging about his misfortune at landing the job there'd be upwards of 1,000,000 people outside Leinster House brandishing pitchforks and demanding an alternative. Any alternative.
Indeed Brian Lenihan was at pains to point out that the local election was not a referendum on the government and that FF/Green still had a mandate and were going to carry on regardless fullfilling that mandate. For this, is it not, what the people of Ireland have voted for? Lenihan would have you believe that the worst result in the history of FF wasn't actually because FF were making a mess of things but for some other reason that he could not elaborate on. He would have you believe that the people of Ireland are delighted with the "performance" of the government. In fact Lenihan claimed that all of Europe were looking over in awe at the wonder of the "plan" that Lenihan was putting into action to deal with the economic crisis in Ireland. A crisis created by himself and Brian Cowen. He boasted that Europe were heavily endorsing his strategies. Of course, Pronsias De Rossa, via satellite link, laughed at this. He told Lenihan that the officials in Europe were satisfied only that his "plan" wasn't breaking any European laws or regulations. They certainly were not in any way endorsing what he was doing. They were merely telling him that they weren't going to haul his sorry ass to Brussels over it. As to whether it would make things any better in Ireland was not a question that the Europeans were going to answer.
While this utter nonsense was going on, Eamon Ryan was beating his breast and lamenting the future of the Irish childrens children if we didn't listen to him about the future of the planet and his various green issues. He wailed and preached and got quite angry while Joan Burton (also taking part in the program) looked to Miriam with an expression on her face that clearly indicated that she thought it was time to have security drag this raver out into the carpark. She looked worried. Interestingly, no-one asked Ryan, practically drooling with rage at this point, why, if he cared about children so much, he stood firmly behind Lenihan and propped up his shabby budget which cut resources in childrens health, welfare, and education. I felt it was far too little much too late by the Greens.
Let's be clear. The local elections were a referendum on the goverment. The government can dig massive holes in the sand and insert their heads all the way in and convince each other that they're a great bunch of lads doing a great job in a difficult time but that won't change the fact that the Irish people are tired of them and want them out. The proof of this lies with the election results.
Lenihan commands a significant salary at the expense of the tax payer and it's both surreal and unacceptable for him to be so out of touch with reality.

Oh well....
The election is over and I managed to accumulate 202 1st preference votes. Of course this did not give me a seat on the Council but for the amount of time that I was in the race I was pleasantly surprised that I got that many and it shows that there is an appetite for change out there.
I would like to thank all those who voted for me and I will run again in 2014 and start the campaign in plenty of time and we will get that number up!
Congratulations to the 5 successful candidates, Peter Coyle (LAB), Cian O'Callaghan (LAB), Alan Farrell (FG), Joan Maher (FG), and Eoghan O'Brien (FF) and to the other 9 candidatess for having the courage to run.

Last Day!
So it's the last day of campaigning. I noticed that a lot of my posters "disappeared" around Portmarnock towards the end of last week and someone elses seemed to appear in their place. Politics appears to be a vicious business.
Not to worry, luckily I hung on to a few and had them rehung yesterday, so all's well that ends well.
I'm down to my last few 100 leaflets aswell so I'll get all those out tonight and then it's in the lap of the gods.
I got a flier in the door in the last few days that indicated that Averil Power had called around to my house and was "sorry that she missed me". I wish I had been there! I would have liked to ask her about how she feels being part of a party who would rather give countless billions to the banks/developers rather than getting 12 year old girls vaccinated against cervical cancer. I have a 9 year old daughter myself so I would not be fobbed off with drivel on this issue.... Oh well. It's a pity I wasn't there but I'm sure both her and her running partner Eoghan O'Brien are getting it in the neck everywhere they go.
And to the poor 6th year students who have had their English paper 2 cancelled this mnorning. This is a terrible, terrible misfortune on you, but please try and remember that everyone doing the exam is in the same boat so it's not an advantage/disadvantage to anyone. I, for one, am thinking of you because we can all remember how difficult it was doing the leaving cert. The very best of luck to you all!

Baldoyle Residents Association
I went to the Baldoyle Residents Association meeting on Tuesday night (at their invitation) to hear about the problems they've been having. For example, do you know that the Millenium Park in Baldoyle which was supposed to be opened for the millenium still isn't open and the association hasn't been offered an explanation for it! It's laughable.
I thought it was interesting that less than half the candidates invited actually bothered to show up. Baldoyle is concerned that it is becoming a forgotten village and I think that at least half the candidates have forgotten about you already! Baldoyle, I support you!

At this point we have a lot of leaflets delivered out to a lot of houses and the posters are everywhere! It's slightly embarassing having 3 ft by 4 ft posters of your face staring at you no matter where you go. I'm starting to get used to it now but it is still a little strange.
I'm getting great help and support from everyone. The people on the street are happy to chat once they've established that you're not from FF!

The 2nd Entry
OK, so the title isn't that imaginitive but it is almost 2am.
Yesterday, I canvassed Seapark/Biscayne in the Malahide area. Nice people! It took some time to get through it but it was worth it. While this was going the 1st of my posters were being erected in Portmarnock (at Leisure Centre end). Thank to the guys for getting this sorted.
Tonight, I put up the 1st posters around Malahide so that should really get the old chins wagging! I have to say that so far I'm absolutely delighted with the support that I'm getting. There's no shortage of people who want to help and the number of people approaching me on the street and pledging their support is amazing. People appear to be genuinely fed up with the status quo.

The 1st Entry
Good Evening!
My name is Pat Joyce and I'm a candidate in the 2009 Local Elections in the Howth/Malahide ward of Fingal. The election is on June 5th and I hope to secure a seat as an independent.
